Science in the Summer Registration begins May 2

Registration forms are available for GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer at Radnor Library beginning May 2 - May 31.

Dates for Science in the Summer are June 27 - June 30.
The 2011 Science in the Summer classes will explore Simple Machines.

Students are selected based on a lottery system and those chosen will be notified by phone and mail. Preference is given to students attend Radnor schools or live in Radnor Township. The 45 minute classes held Monday - Thursday are for students entering 2nd to 6th grades. Morning and afternoon classes are available.

Science in the Summer

Beth Zigmont, 8th grade teacher at Radnor Middle School led 64 children in GlaxoSmithKline's Science in the Summer program. From June 28 to July 1 for 45 minutes a day, the children explored Chemistry. We learned about Chemical and Physical reactions; different states of matter - gas, solids and liquids; looking at density, and finally acids and bases.

In this video, Ms. Zigmont demonstrates a how a Hollywood moive might create a witches brew made from a chemical reaction of dry ice and water. Additionally, she illustrates liquid nitrogen evaporation process to the astonishment of the kids. Music by Miss Abbe using GarageBand.

Registration has ended for Science in the Summer. It is a lottery system and we are ever so sorry, but because so many of you have applied, we have more kids than open spots. Please be patient as we are in the thick of school visits. We will phone those who have been selected. If you have not been selected you are placed on the waiting list.

GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer is a free science education program that helps elementary school children in the greater Philadelphia area “grow into science.”

Announcing Summer Reading!!

You may ask why we seem to gear down right before summer. For example, what happened to storytimes in May? Well, we are actually preparing for our busiest season - SUMMER READING CLUB and SCIENCE IN THE SUMMER. We have an exciting summer planned and one way we get the word out is through school visits. Last week we visited Agnes Irwin School. Check out the photo shot by school Librarian Michelle Burns. In case you were wondering, Miss Carlson and Miss Abbe are preforming the Baby Shark song!

BTW, our theme this year is water as in "Make a Splash: Read." Henry Cole was chosen as this years illustrator. Check out his newest book - A Nest for Celeste, his fine book on the naturalist, Joseph Audubon.

Science in the Summer in three letters: DNA

Wow! We had a successful Science in the Summer class this season at Radnor Memorial Library! Cheri Freeman, who teaches Biology at the Penn-Delco School district during the year, was our instructor. She expertly explained Genetics to our 64 participants. Students fashioned a DNA model, extracted DNA from strawberries, learned about genetic mutations and more. Oh, and everyone, including me learned out to pronounce DeoxyriboNucleic Acid that's DNA to you lay people.
