Police Patches on Display

Next time you're in the library, check out what's new in our display case-- a collection of police patches from all over the United States and a few from other countries, as well! These items are on loan from a local high school student who has over 150 police patches, ranging from local township police to state highway patrol patches.

In the display, see if you can find the patch from the police department that's closest to Radnor. And see if you can find the names of all the other countries represented in the collection.

In addition to the patches, you'll find a modern-day Italian Carabinieri officer's hat!

Wallaby Tales Traveling Zoo

Magic in a Winter Wonderland

This past Saturday was pretty mild, with only a few small scattered corners of snow in the shadows around the Radnor Library... But inside, Magician Steve Woyce inspired imaginations to step into a winter wonderland adventure.

Every hand in the audience (parents and grandparents were outstanding sports!) formed a snowball and tossed it up front into a magical pan. And then, with one quick movement, the previously empty pan revealed a fully-formed snowman. The giggles took over the room when Steve couldn't find the right magic wand and when he gave his volunteers all kinds of silly tasks and silly props and silly hats. The grand finale was the most delightful surprise... After some entertaining antics, we watched a real rabbit suddenly appear, twitching nose and all!

A Kindermusik Morning

January 13th started out as a typically quiet Friday morning at the Radnor Library... until about 10:30 when the Winsor Room swarmed with an enthusiastic crowd of toddlers, preschoolers, and their caregivers for an hour of musical fun with local Kindermusik instructor Becky Douglas. The jackets and mittens came off and the smiles came on when Miss Becky handed out an assortment of musical instruments perfect for little ones, like wooden sticks and egg shakers.

Even basic household objects became sources of music and movement--Plastic spoons held a beat, scarves created colorful motion, and paper plates became ice skates as the children glided across the carpeted floor.

Miss Becky led action rhymes and dances and kept the energy up with her musical reading of Cows in the Kitchen by June Crebbin.

Hi! My name is Carrie and I'm the new Children's Librarian at Radnor Library. I just started at the end of December and will be working with Miss Carlson at the Children's Desk. I will also be leading the Big Steps and Preschool Storytimes.

Some of my favorite books are A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett and The Sound of Colors: A Journey of the Imagination by Jimmy Liao.

I look forward to meeting some Radnor families at storytime, upcoming events, and around the library. Please stop by and introduce yourself any time!

A picture of my favorite book.

Today is my last day at Radnor Memorial Library. I'm so thankful that Dorothy Carlson hired me five years ago while I was still a library student. She guided me and was a tremendous mentor.

I have come to love all my wonderful, hardworking colleagues. And I especially love those who have come into the library seeking help with a title, enjoyed storytimes, and participated in our programs.

Change is never easy. I'm not one for long speeches. So I'll just say thanks so much to each of you who have touched my life. I hope I've helped a few wee ones love books just a bit more and brought some joy into your life. I know what I've gained is so much more!

Please welcome the new librarian (yet to be hired) with welcome arms and a big smile.

Next week "It's a small world" program ends when we present a program on South Africa. Below are videos on India and China. Thanks to adults Sandhya Taghavi, Shobba Sharma and Theji Brennan along with kids: Sunny Taghavi, Shanti and Tara Hug and Kiran and Kai Brennan, Arav and Niva Menon who described aspects of India.The group was treated to tasty snacks, viewed a fashion show and learned many interesting facts about the country.

We also presented a program on China led by Fred Young, his wife Susan Moy and their son Carter Young. Special thanks to the dancers from the Chinese Language and Cultural Summer Camp Center who entertained the group with traditional dancing.

The Children's Department of Radnor Memorial Library asked members of the community from various parts of the world to "teach" children about their homeland. Zulema Kaper-Barcelata kicked off the "It's a Small World" program with a glimpse of Mexico on Tuesday, July 5. We learned about the country, saw pictures listened to music and danced. We also ate a snack and made a craft: Ojo De Dios or God's Eye Craft. Thank you so much - Zulema!

39 Clues Scavenger Hunt @ Radnor Library

They had one week to photograph 39 things, search for 39 items and discover fun facts in our database and scour the library using a map for clues. We had the best time with Daria on June 17. Our kickoff Summer Reading program was filled with international instruments and great songs from around the world. Daria also brought homemade musical instruments for audience members to try along with instruments such as a donkey's jaw bone, among others! She brought her friend Tony who played the drums! The Fun on a String performances incorporate hand puppets, hand-and-rod puppets, marionettes, and object theatre. The various puppets are combined into a variety show, which encourages audience participation. A brief introduction about the art of puppetry leads into a demonstration of how to make puppets from everyday household materials.

In less than a week, families will be challenged to participate in Radnor Library's Family Scavenger Hunt! Families will work as a team to complete several fun tasks. Come to our opening program next Friday night to get the rules and information packet. Those brave families that accept will have one week to complete the quest. You are then asked to come back to the library on Friday, June 24th at 7 p.m. in the Winsor Room where judges will count points and award prizes!!!!

Over the past two weeks, Miss Carlson and Miss Abbe roared through Radnor, Ithan and Wayne Elementary schools to promote Summer Reading at Radnor Library! We spoke to more than 1500 students! Thanks to all the schools who hosted us! We had a blast!

During our classroom visits we called on teachers to help us with Readers Theater. Here we are with 5th grade Wayne Elementary School teachers Mrs. Coppola and Mrs. Shuda. Brava to all the teachers on their acting prowess!

While we were at Wayne Elementary we were lucky enough to catch award winning, children's author, and Radnor Township resident Jerry Spinelli speaking to the Mrs. Crowe's 4th grade class. He fielded questions from students about his books, and spoke about the value of failing among other topics.

Come to the library and we will help or sign up on your home computer. The Club is for Preschool to Elementary School.
Readers receive free book for every 10 longer books completed or for 20 picture books or easy books. Must report at least one book in person at the library. Read to me members receive free book for 25 listened to and must report one in person. Money will be donated to Heifer International for Club members who complete the minimum.

A Clean Success

Thanks to the Eastern University Students who donated their time to wash cars on Saturday May 11 for a Radnor Memorial Library Fundraiser. And thanks to residents who brought their cars to be cleaned and donated to the library! It was so successful that the students plan on a Fall Car Wash as well.

Science in the Summer Registration begins May 2

Registration forms are available for GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer at Radnor Library beginning May 2 - May 31.

Dates for Science in the Summer are June 27 - June 30.
The 2011 Science in the Summer classes will explore Simple Machines.

Students are selected based on a lottery system and those chosen will be notified by phone and mail. Preference is given to students attend Radnor schools or live in Radnor Township. The 45 minute classes held Monday - Thursday are for students entering 2nd to 6th grades. Morning and afternoon classes are available.

Free Library of Philadelphia Book Fest was filled with great authors

Thanks to the Free Library of Philadelphia who put on an awesome book fest. The lineup was stellar. Miss Carlson and I heard Chris Van Allsburg, speak about his new book Queen of the Falls, Caldecott winner Erin Stead was there with her husband and collaborator. The two explained their writing and illustrating process for A Sick Day for Amos McGee. We heard National Book Award Winner, Mockingbird author Kathryn Erskine, three of the authors from the 39 Clues, and last but not least Mr. Walter Dean Myers who spoke about new new book Carmen and having and giving value to ones life.

(Wow! I can't believe I next to Mr. Walter Dean Myers. Is it me, or does he not seem so happy to pose with me. I made him anyway.)

(I'm deep in thought with the author of a new series, The Emerald Atlas, John Stephens, former co-producer and writer for The Gilmore Girls and The O.C., who became executive producer (and occasional writer and director) for Gossip Girls.)

Chickens invade Storytime

Adult Reference Librarian Pam Sedor was kind enough to bring her two fancy chickens Ella "Ellie" Fitzgerald and Patsy "Patsy" Cline to the last Preschool Storytime of the season. Both chickens are cochins - a special breed of chicken, but Patsy, who looks like she walked backwards in a wind storm, is a frizzle cochin. Thanks Pam and company! Garage Band music by me

Wild Animals Storm Radnor Library

On March 26 Travis Gale brought a menagerie of wild animals to Radnor Library. Nearly 130 community members gave Travis and his traveling bunch rave reviews for his special branch of education and humor. A total of 60 children and adults participated in our Whose Shoes program held on Saturday, March 26. Pennsylvania's sponsored program is based on studies showing that reading should include activities that relate to the book, such as discussing the action, favorite parts, and play.

Children were treated to flannel board guessing games, seeing the book projected on the wall, songs, shoe relay races, crafts and more. Check out our video.

We were thrilled to have Marcela Summerville, director of Spanish Workshop for Children back for the second half of our Spanish Workshop. On March 16th parents and children went on a magical flight to Venezuela. When they arrived, only Spanish was spoken in our story tent. Using puppets, stories, songs and “food” Summerville filled the hour with laughs and learning. Thanks Marcela!

Folding with Origami Mommy

Rachel Ndeto from Tyler Arboretum presented Discoveries in your Backyard on January 22. Children learned to identify various animal tracks found in the area, the proper term for deer poop (scat) and which animals hibernate. Of course, Miss Carlson read before the program. The hour-long event concluded with a make and take craft.

Remembering award-winning British Author Eva Ibbotson, 85

We were sad to read that author Eva Ibbotson, best known for The Secret of Platform 13, The Star of Kazan and Island of the Aunts, died at age 85. Ibbotson is a personal favorite of Miss Carlson and often recommends her books to children who enjoy light fantasy. Ibbotson's books were not only character driven but filled with thrills and fun chills. She leaves us with two books to be published this summer. We look forward to reading them.

If you think children as young as 2 1/2, who don't speak Spanish can comprehend a storytime spoken entirely in Spanish, you would be surprised. Marcela Summerville, always entertaining and educational knows the importance of early literacy, particularly, speaking a variety of languages and how to make it fun.

Becky Douglas of Kindermusik came to Radnor Library on January 12 to present a toddler music and literacy class and the event was picked up by the local paper! Becky comes to Radnor Library several times a year to donate her services. She combines books and music and movement to assist with early literacy skills.

WHAT???? Today Show snubs Newbery and Caldecott winners for Snookie

What does this say about our country when Newbery and Caldecott Award winners are bumped for "author" Snookie??? Yes, this did happen on the NBC Today show. This comes at a time when Illiteracy rates are skyrocketing and high school graduation rates are plummeting. Yet, Snookie rates as an author over winners of the most distinguished awards in Children's Literature? Boo! Shame on NBC for turning down these award winners for the ill-behaved reality show personality, Snookie. Write to NBC to register your outrage!!

This year the Newbery and Caldecott winners were surprises. Check out this link to find out what most thought were the best 100 books of 2010.

First time author Clare Vanderpool received the Newbery Medal for Moon over Manifest and Illustrator Erin E. Stead was awarded the Caldecott Medal for A Sick Day for Amos McGee.

On Saturday, January 8th, Nearly 20 community members made awesome designs during our Radnor Library build it program. First up, Miss Carlson read a Creaky old house: a topsy-turvy tale of a real fixer-upper by Linda Ashmana. Kids then broke up into groups and used blocks, Legos, Connector Sticks, and Cheese puffs to fashion outstanding creations . Later, with a variety of materials, they constructed a make and take project. Check out our cool video with original music by Corey Parrish.

Her official anniversary was on December 1st, but we celebrated her big day Monday, December 6th. Fun on a string variety puppet show with Miss Penny

Saturday, Dec. 11 @ 2 p.m.

This variety puppet show incorporates hand puppets, rod puppets, marionettes and object theatre. The various puppets are combined into a variety show which encourages audience participation. A brief introduction about the art of puppetry leads into a demonstration of how to make puppets from everyday household materials. No registration is required for this family program, ideal for ages 4-12.

Dino Dig at Radnor Library

Wow! Radnor loves Dinos. 100 Community members came to the library on Nov. 20th to see really, really old stuff. Mike & Roberta Straka, paleontologists, showed off fossils they found digging in the desert. The show featured Mr. Nixon, an 8 ft. Triceratops skull discovered by their team in 1996, music, magic, puppets, and a dino game show. Check out our video. BobBox, the box turtle came and inspired and awed kids at Radnor Library last week @ Preschool storytime. We read turtle books, sang turtle songs, and constructed a turtle craft. Bob's owner, Susan Farber, found Bob on the side of the road 21 years ago. He now lives in an aquarium in their kitchen. Thank you Susan, not only for letting us borrow Bob, but for all your hard work volunteering at the book sale! Thanks to Krista Parrish for her original music.

The 13 Days of Halloween

Dress up was not mandatory for our special preschool storytime, however, we had plenty of costumes on hand for those not attired in Halloween garb. A big shout out goes to Big Daddy of The Snakeoilers, for his great rendition of The 13 Days of Halloween. He came to both Tuesday and Wednesday storytimes.

Fairies all around Radnor Library

We had a fluttering good time at our Fairy Party on October 30. After the kids listened to several Fairy stories, we were lucky enough to have a special guest "fairy" Jenna Eugenides, of Dance Muse studio in King of Prussia, who helped the children bring together literature with movement. We played The Freeze Dance Game and our Fairy Godmother a.k.a. Miss Carlson played a game of Simon Fairy Says then the kids were able to make two crafts including a tasty fairy wand.
